“Karoy” composes a tableau of cruelty, brutality and forgiveness, set against the backdrop of the sheer endless landscapes of central Asia. It centres on the unscrupulous Azat, who leaves a trail of blood in his wake through humble Kazakh villages. He pillages, rapes and takes advantage of people’s weaknesses. When he pays for his deeds in an unparalleled orgy of violence, he has a Damascene experience. Full of black humour, this drama won the directing prize at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.
